Can you share a bit about your background and how you found your way into the construction industry and to work at VCC?
As a kid, I always had an interest in seeing how things come together, the ins and outs and the small intricacies that go into constructing things. Even in high school, I used to hang out with my friends in our parents’ front yards working on project cars together. I didn’t realize it at the time, but my path into construction really started with the purchase of my first house. I became obsessed with the how-to’s and why’s of construction, and the following year I was on the CM path in college. After several years of building in the surrounding Gainesville area, my family and I decided we’d like to travel. That’s when I came across VCC and had the opportunity to join a great team. The rest is history.
What led you to become a Superintendent?
My first internship was in the field assisting the superintendent. He taught me a lot about the relationships you can build out there and what it takes to be a super. As a former retail manager, it also intrigued me knowing I could carry over some of those people and leadership skills to help direct a project.
What aspects of your job as a Project Engineer do you find the most fulfilling or challenging?
Seeing drawings go from 2D to 3D and knowing my contributions helped build a habitable space
As someone that has worked on different jobsites with many individuals and teams, what qualities do you appreciate most in your colleagues and team members?
Personally, I appreciate a team member’s willingness to both teach and learn. No one is born knowing everything, so the sharing and passing of knowledge is very valuable in my eyes
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Hopefully on a several-acre property, watching my kids chase around the farm animals.

Tell us a little about yourself!
My name is Heather Gantt, I am from Dallas Texas and currently live in Apopka Florida. I am working on the Southwick Commons Multi Family that is 192 units. I love to hang out with my 2 amazing dogs, cook and I love to build legos, and fish.
Why did you choose to go into construction?
I did an internship and immediately loved it. I love to see the results of my work and at the end of the day I can point to something I built and say “I helped create that”. I also enjoy hands-on problem solving and working as a team to bring plans to life. Construction is interesting and challenging which makes it fun!
What, if any, challenges have you faced as a woman in the construction industry?
The biggest challenge I’ve faced is having to prove myself in a male dominated industry. I am consistently demonstrating my knowledge and work ethic, but these experiences have made me more confident, resilient, and determined to succeed.
What do you love most about working in construction?
THE RESULTS! I love seeing everything come together at the end. I also love the traveling part of it and seeing different cities/States.
What advice do you have for young ladies considering going into construction?
Be bold, be yourself, be strong and encouraging.
What would you like to see happen in the future to bring women into the industry?
I would love to see more women in construction, thriving!
Lastly, what are your career goals?
My career goal is to continue developing my skills and experience in the construction industry so I can take on more responsibility over time. I aim to grow into a leadership role such as a superintendent or Operations manager, or even in project engineering, where I can help lead teams, ensure quality work, and contribute to successful projects. I also want to keep learning and earning my spot as a Women in Construction, and strengthen my expertise.

Getting to know VCC Project Manager Bridget Jasso and her take on being a woman in a male-dominated profession.
Tell us a little about yourself!
Howdy! I am originally from McAllen, Texas, and graduated from Texas A&M University in College Station with a bachelor’s degree in Construction Science in August 2024. I’m currently working in Houston, Texas, and I have two playful cats. In my free time, I enjoy attending Pilates and Barre classes, going to concerts and festivals, and spending time relaxing at home.
Why did you choose to go into construction?
I grew up around my grandfather that is part owner of a construction company and worked in the industry for 50 years. I was able to see the dedication and pride that goes into this field. It showed me that it is not just about building structures, but also about building relationships, communities, and a legacy.
What, if any, challenges have you faced as a woman in the construction industry?
As a woman working in a male-dominated industry, one challenge I’ve faced is feeling underestimated and needing to work a little harder to prove myself. However, over the past two years, I’ve learned to let my knowledge, preparation, and confidence speak for me. That mindset has helped me trust my abilities and lead with professionalism.
What do you love most about working in construction?
I love seeing a project come to life from start to finish. Being involved in a project knowing that it will benefit the community and residents is incredibly rewarding after it is completed. I also love collaboration and being involved in all phases of the project with my team.
What advice do you have for young ladies considering going into construction?
Don’t feel intimidated! The construction industry needs more women in the field. Be confident, carry yourself professionally, and never hesitate to ask questions. Building strong relationships and being open to constructive feedback will help you go far in this industry.
What would you like to see happen in the future to bring women into the industry?
I would love to see more mentorship programs in helping women understand that construction offers many leadership and growth opportunities. The more representation we have, the more welcoming the industry will feel to the next generation.
Lastly, what are your career goals?
My career goals are to keep developing into a strong, well-rounded leader by taking on greater responsibilities and more impactful projects. I plan to continue refining my skills in problem-solving, team leadership, and client relationships. Long term, I envision myself in a senior leadership position where I can help shape strategy and mentor the next generation in the industry.

A Q&A session with Project Engineer Fidele Kabera on her journey as a woman in the construction industry.
Tell us a little about yourself!
I am Fidele MK Girabawe and I am originally from Rwanda. I arrived in the USA in 2013 to pursue undergrad degree at The University of Arkansas at Little Rock. I also hold a master’s degree in civil and construction engineering from Vanderbilt University. I am a mother of a 2.5-year-old daughter and a wife. I am currently living in Plano, TX. I enjoy spending quality time with family and friends, listening to music and dancing.
Why did you choose to go into construction?
I have a strong background in Mathematics and Physics, and I have always been fascinated with how structures
come together. Coming from where tall towers are lacking and little to no bridges, I have chosen to study Civil and Construction with an aim to make contribution to society in that field.
What, if any, challenges have you faced as a woman in the construction industry?
Over nine years working in the field, the most challenges I faced as a woman in construction are being under looked; my capabilities being ignored among fellow decision makers. Assumptions from my peers that I might not be skilled enough in the matter.
What do you love most about working in construction?
Working on projects from its inception to turnkey. Working with different people from different backgrounds in the industry. Opportunity to learn and grow every single day.
What advice do you have for young ladies considering going into construction?
Always be ready to put your boots on the ground. It’s not too complicated as it appears. Be ready to take harsh criticism, but don’t be discouraged. Instead, be eager to learn and grow from your peers as they might know something you would need to use in the future. Also stay connected with people in the industry.
What would you like to see happen in the future to bring women into the industry?
Simply get them involved (provide internships, mentorships) while they are still in school. Bring them in the fields not just in the offices.
Lastly, what are your career goals?
I see myself growing in the industry so younger generation can learn one thing or another from my contributions in the industry.

It is with warmth and sincere appreciation that we send off a true leader at VCC, Donna Bean, as she retires after nearly 25 years of dedicated service.
Throughout her tenure, Donna played an essential role in shaping VCC in countless ways, and we cannot thank her enough for the impact she has made. Over the many years she led our Human Resources department, Donna helped define and strengthen the culture of VCC. From recruiting and onboarding—long before we had a dedicated recruiter—to helping each new employee understand what #TeamVCC represents, Donna ensured that every individual felt welcomed and valued as part of our VCC family.
Donna was instrumental in building the Human Resources department from the ground up, overseeing policies, employee handbooks, compliance, and payroll. Her commitment, knowledge, and leadership laid the foundation that continues to support our team today.

Since VCC's inception in 1987, giving back has been an intricate part of our organization and culture. Over a decade ago we created VCC Cares Foundation as a place to focus on which organizations we give money to near where we live and work - primarily involving children in need and our warriors and their families.
Our primary fundraiser is three annual golf tournaments held each autumn, VCC Cares Foundation Charity Golf Classic. This year is the 10th Anniversary of the event and so we made a few changes, most notably the venues. This year all three events took place at Topgolf locations (Little Rock, Alpharetta, and The Colony). We are proud to say that thanks to our sponsors the events were a huge success, raising over $200,000 for our charities!
We cannot thank the sponsors enough! We had several that made donations and were not able to join us in person as well as those that attended the events. We want to give special shout outs to our Excellence and Platinum Sponsors.

Employee Spotlight: Alex Glier
We sat down with Alex to learn more about his journey at VCC, his insights into the industry, and a few things that make him who he is outside of work.
What originally drew you to a career in construction, and how did you find your way into your current role as an Assistant Superintendent at VCC?
I have always enjoyed building things and watching things get built. Growing up, I played a lot of different sports and found passion in accomplishing goals, improving skills, and facing adversity alongside teammates. Once I got to college and was searching for an undergrad program to pursue, Construction Management stuck out like a sore thumb. When VCC granted me the opportunity to be a part of their family, I took that opportunity and ran with it. I wouldn’t have my current role if it weren’t for all the team members here that have taken time out of their days to teach me and share their immense wisdom.
Every project comes with its own learning curve. Can you share one recent project that taught you something new or pushed you to grow professionally?
We just recently wrapped up a Dicks Sporting Goods project in Dallas, Texas. This project was an interior remodel with a new storefront. A common term utilized daily was “tying into the existing...”. This was my first remodel project and I got to work alongside an outstanding superintendent that showed me the major importances of tying into existing infrastructures – whether it be MEP, structural, or civil. There was a lot of intricate details on this project where I got a firsthand look of building within an existing structure.
Construction often requires juggling a lot at once—deadlines, budgets, teams, and clients. How do you keep yourself organized and focused when things get busy?
Construction can get very busy. I’ve learned that the best way to work through this is by taking a step back and figuring out which items need to be prioritized first and in what order. Then when things slow down a little, I utilize that time to catch up on minor tasks before things start to get busy again. I give all credit to the VCC members who I’ve had an opportunity to work with, as they have taught me much of the organizational skills I utilize today.
Collaboration is a big part of what we do. What’s one quality you think is essential for building strong relationships with clients, trade partners, and your team?
I believe patience is a quality trait for building and strengthening relationships. Patience positively impacts skills like decision making, active listening, and resiliency. These skills will come in handy while taking part in collaborative tasks and can greatly assist in building relationships between teammates, clients, and trade partners.
Outside of work, what’s a hobby, interest, or activity you’re passionate about that helps you recharge?
If I need to recharge, I will pack up my fishing gear and kayak and set out for a river. Fishing always assists in refreshing my body, mind, and spirit. Just being by the water and surrounded by nature lets me recharge – catching fish is just a bonus.
If you could instantly pick up a new skill—whether related to construction or something totally unrelated—what would it be and why?
If I could instantly pick up a new skill, it would be the skill to learn new languages efficiently and effectively. The ability to go to foreign countries and quickly pick up on their languages seems fascinating.

Celebrating A Decade
of VCC Cares Charity Golf Classic!
It is hard to believe that we are celebrating a decade of VCC Cares Foundation Charity Golf Classic tournaments! We have raised more than $1.6 million during that time to support incredible organizations. We hope to vastly increase that amount this year. This year’s beneficiaries include:
- Community Connections provides FREE extracurricular activities for children with special needs.
- CPC: Children’s Protection Center is a child advocacy and safety center serving Central AR children and families, working to end child abuse.
- Immerse Arkansas helps youth from crisis transform into overcomers.
- Atlanta Children’s Day Shelter works To break the cycle of poverty for families facing homelessness by building pathways to long-term self-sufficiency and providing quality early childhood education.
- Special Operation Warrior Foundation provides education to the children of fallen Special Operations Personnel and all Medal of Honor Recipients.
- Variety Texas is dedicated to reducing isolation and stigma for families with special needs in TX through empowering experiences and resources.
There is a big change we are making to this year’s tournaments – Topgolf! In the past, only the Atlanta event has been held at Topgolf, with Dallas and Little Rock events held at traditional golf courses. The Atlanta event is so much fun that we decided to move the other 2 events to Topgolf as well but on different dates. Mark your calendars with the dates below then follow the link to register.
