Grand Opening IKEA Burbank

IKEA, located in Burbank, California, is double in size from its previous location just down the street. The project is a state-of-the-art 470,000 sq. ft., a two-story building over a podium parking structure. Founded in Sweden in 1943, IKEA is the world’s largest furniture retailer specializing in ready-to-assemble furniture and home accessories. The new Burbank store has the same architectural design as the other stores but will feature more merchandise. This includes a larger quantity of nearly 10,000 exclusively designed items, 50 room settings, three model home interiors, a supervised children’s play area, and a larger restaurant serving Swedish specialties. VCC was selected as general contractor to demolish the current IKEA, prepare the site and build the new store. Demolition included the removal of 27 existing buildings while coordinating with open businesses. The site is 23.21 acres consisting of lots of logistical considerations from other businesses, contaminated soil, and being in a high traffic area. Because this project is in the heart of a major city, there was the rerouting of the thoroughfare First Street through the project and installation of new fiber-optic lines. Multiple regulatory agencies were involved throughout construction including the EPA, Regional Water Quality Control Board, South Coast Air Quality Management District, the Rail Road Transit Authority, Department of Toxic Substances Control and other requisite municipal entities.

The IKEA Grand Opening was last week. Check out some of the details that the LA Times highlighted! http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-ikea-burbank-20170208-story.html.
